Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm, and for good reason. The famous K-beauty routine focuses on achieving "glass skin" - that dewy, luminous, almost translucent complexion that looks like, well, glass.
What is the Korean Skincare Routine?
The Korean skincare routine is a multi-step regimen that emphasizes hydration, gentle cleansing, and layering products from thinnest to thickest consistency. While the famous "10-step routine" might sound intimidating, the beauty of K-beauty is that it's completely customizable to your skin's needs.
Pro Tip: You don't need to do all 10 steps every day. Start with the basics and add products as needed.
The 10 Steps Explained
Step 1: Oil Cleanser
Start with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Oil attracts oil, making this the most effective first step for truly clean skin. Massage gently for 1-2 minutes.
Best for: Everyone, especially those who wear makeup or sunscreen
Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser
Follow with a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities. This "double cleansing" method ensures your skin is completely clean without being stripped of natural oils.
Important: Always use lukewarm water. Hot water can strip your skin's natural oils and cause irritation.
Step 3: Exfoliator (2-3 times per week)
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover. Choose between physical exfoliators (scrubs) or chemical exfoliators (AHAs, BHAs) based on your skin type.
Step 4: Toner
Korean toners are different from Western astringents. They're hydrating and help balance your skin's pH while prepping it to absorb subsequent products.
Step 5: Essence
The heart of Korean skincare! Essences are lightweight, hydrating liquids that help with cell turnover and provide a base layer of hydration.
Step 6: Serum/Ampoule
This is where you target specific concerns - whether it's brightening, anti-aging, or acne. Serums have concentrated active ingredients.
Step 7: Sheet Mask (optional)
Sheet masks are soaked in essence and provide intensive hydration. Use 2-3 times per week for an extra boost.
Step 8: Eye Cream
The delicate eye area needs special attention. Use a gentle patting motion with your ring finger to apply.
Step 9: Moisturizer
Lock in all that hydration with a moisturizer suited to your skin type. Gel for oily skin, cream for dry skin.
Step 10: Sunscreen (AM only)
The most important step! UV damage causes 80% of visible aging. Use SPF 30-50 daily, even on cloudy days.
Remember: Consistency is more important than complexity. A simple routine done daily will always beat an elaborate routine done sporadically.
Adapting for Your Skin Type

- Look for hyaluronic acid and ceramides
For Sensitive Skin
- Keep your routine minimal
